Hi there! Nice to meet you.

I was once told, “Do good—it’s all that matters,” and it has since become a life mantra, a constant regardless of changing scenery or work.

I grew up in (very) northern California before continuing north to study urban planning, public policy, and nonprofit administration as an Oregon Duck. My studies led me to Washington, D.C. for several years where I worked as a government contractor conducting research and providing technical assistance on homelessness programs across the country. During this time, I volunteered extensively in the community, providing both direct services to individuals and families in need, as well as pro-bono communications consulting to local nonprofits. Also during this time, I co-founded a group called Wild Wilderness Women and embarked on a growing passion for the great outdoors.

My love of the outdoors is what took me away from D.C., as I moved back to Oregon for a six-month position as the artist-in-residence for Oregon Caves National Monument and Preserve, where I found creative ways to tell the story of the park. After Oregon, I traveled to the Black Hills of South Dakota and explored the region’s unique terrain for two years before moving to my current home in eastern Tennessee to learn from the wisdom of the Great Smoky Mountains and, of course, Dolly Parton.

My interests, titles, and locations have varied over time, but I’ve found that they all end up connected through my writing. I believe in writing that moves people. Writing should make its readers feel something, whether it’s that they can truly imagine they’ve been to a distant land the writing describes, or whether it’s calling them to work for social and environmental justice in their community. Writing is a way of sharing our worlds with each other. It is a way to communicate ideas in ways that others can relate to, and then long to share with others.

As a full-time freelance writer and editor, I have worked with several inspiring, mission-driven companies and nonprofits. I have also written for a range of publications, including Sierra Magazine, She Explores, Fodor’s Travel, Shelterforce Magazine, and Adventure Journal, among others. In all of my work and relationships with my clients, I ask myself how I can use this opportunity to do some good for the world, and in doing so I’ve been fortunate to partner with truly wonderful media outlets and organizations.
